You can learn how to deal with anxiety. For those of us who get with anxiety attacks, we distinguish what it feels like. Our heart pounds. We get butterflies in our tummy. We fear and fret over everything and anything. We have hot and cold sweats. Our throats go dry and we have difficulty swallowing, just to name a few.

These anxiety attacks can appear from no where. I have spoken with lots of people who have said “my life is great; I don’t understand why I am suddenly suffering with anxiety attacks”. This is the nature of the beast. There is no chosen format for anxiety attacks. They can occur to people whose lives are going really well, as well, as those who lives are not going so well.

null It’s not like having a cold or some other illness, where there symptoms are typical and easy to see and diagnose.

Understanding what anxiety attacks are will help you to have more control and help you dealing with anxiety. It’s normal to worry and feel tense or fearful when under burden or facing a taxing situation. Anxiety is the body’s natural response to danger, an automatic alarm that goes off when we feel threatened.

From my personal understanding off living with anxiety attacks, I am aware of the fact that the more you think about the anxiety the stronger the symptoms become. The stronger the symptoms, the stronger the anxiety attacks become. Then you’re in the realms of a viscous circle. This is when it becomes really hard to over come your anxiety attacks.

It’s not till you truly become aware of the fact that your thoughts have shaped your anxiety, so it stands to reason that if you have manifested the anxiety attack then surely you can UNcreate the anxiety attacks. This element is really hard for people to understand. And I know precisely how they think! When I was told this, I rejected it. Why would I want to do this to myself? It did not make sense.

But at the end of the day no matter how much I tried to ignore that fact, it was accurate, my thoughts where the foundation of my anxiety. I experimented with it. The more I focused my energy on the anxiety the stronger my anxiety attack became. So with the help of a therapist, I was able to work on my thoughts and defeat my anxiety.

It would be a lie to say I am anxiety free, however I am much more able to deal with anxiety, I have more coping strategies. Dealing with anxiety is now much easier for me.

Another to bear in mind, is that anxiety may be unpleasant, but it isn’t always a difficult thing. This anxiety can help up be alert, the adrenalin can keep us focused. Wwhen anxiety is relentless, when it interferes with relationships and activities-that’s when you’ve crossed the line from normal anxiety into the territory of anxiety disorders.

It has been a known information for many years that anxious parents can pass anxiety disorders on to their children. Although this truth is well known, no one is prepared to say yes to this question “is anxiety inherited”.

But now, a new study by the scientists at Johns Hopkins Children’s Centre, came up with the conclusion that a family-based program where parents and children are being treated jointly, can reduce the symptoms and risks of anxiety amongst these children.

Each person can get fretful from time to time, but when the crisis starts taking over one’s life, the condition is then called anxiety disorder. It can be exceedingly stressful and inhibit people from living their lives fully. Some individuals with anxiety disorder may also have phobias and develop panic attacks.

For the study purposes, the Hopkins investigators looked at 40 children with the ages between 7 and 12 years. The children were not diagnosed with anxiety disorder themselves but all of them had at least one parent who was diagnosed with the condition. What other proof do we really need to answer the question “is anxiety inherited“.

Researchers randomly split the participants into two groups, with 20 of the children and their families taking part in an 8-week cognitive behavioural therapy program, while the other 20 were put on a waiting list and did not receive any treatment during the period of the study, but were offered therapy one year later.

The CBT program, which consisted of one-hour-long weekly sessions, was focusing on an development of problem-solving skills, instruction about anxiety disorder, as well as helped parents identify and change behaviours alleged to contribute to anxiety in the children.

The chief researcher of the study, Dr. Golda Ginsburg, PH.D., a child psychologist at Hopkins Children’s Centre and an associate professor of psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, said that according to the records gathered by the experts, the children of parents with an anxiety disorder are up to seven times more likely to develop the disorder themselves, and up to 65 per cent of kids who live with an anxious parent meet the criteria for anxiety disorder.

The results of the trial revealed that within a period of 12 months, 30 per cent of the children who did not participate in the program, had developed an anxiety disorder, compared to none of the children who were enrolled in the family based therapy. A 40 per cent decrease in anxiety symptoms in the year after the therapy program were independently reported by parents along with investigators who analyzed the behaviour of the kids and their parents. There was no fall of anxiety symptoms observed among children on the waiting list.

The parental behaviours adapted with therapy program included overprotection, excessive criticism and excessive expression of fear and anxiety in front of the kids. The program targeted childhood risk factors such as avoiding anxiety-provoking situations and anxious thoughts.

According to a recent editorial in The New England Journal of Medicine, it is deterrence and not treatment, of childhood anxiety, that is of a primary importance, because anxiety disorders affect one in every 5 children in the United States, but very often are left unrecognized. If not addressed in time, the trouble can lead to depression, substance abuse and poor academic performance throughout childhood years and way into adulthood.

Results of the study will be published in the June issue of the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. The study was funded by the US government’s National Institute of Mental Health. So “is anxiety inherited“, yes. Can we change the pattern of behaviour yes!

Could it assist a few of us if we had the answer to this question “is anxiety inherited”?

I’m not positive. It may help us come to terms with the fact that we suffer with anxiety.

Have you looked at your family history, parents, grandparents and maybe even further back? Or have you grown up with a family member suffering from anxiety?

My mother suffered fairly badly with anxiety, chiefly when she was going all through the change.

Her anxiety triggered her to become house bound, resulting in her leaving her job on health grounds.

I don’t recollect looking back at my younger days my mum suffering with anxiety. But she did. Just because I cannot recall it. It does not denote that I did not pick up on it.

The predicament for me is, that since she was suffering with anxiety, I may well of picked up that learnt behaviour, without truly knowing what it was.

So back to the big question “is anxiety inherited”, well it may not of been in my actual genes, but I could of learnt the anxiety behaviour from my mum.

I have had some great debates with friends on this subject.

Like how come I have anxiety and my three brothers and my sister do not suffer with anxiety. For sure that would confirm that anxiety is not inherited. Although on the other hand I have to have learnt it from somebody?

My anxiety has been labelled as “free floating anxiety”, so I do not know what I get anxious around, but I do know I have anxiety. So understandably I must have learnt that behaviour from somewhere.

The reason this is so key to me is, I if I learnt this behaviour, then I can work on learning a fresh way of becoming. I can work on the reality that this is the behaviour of my Mother and not me. It was something that I picked up while I was growing up. It does not belong to me; I borrowed it from my Mum. I did not appreciate what I was picking up on. But I picked up on the anxiety my mum was suffering from and stored it away ready for the right conditions to manifest in my life for it to happen and be part of my life.

For me “is anxiety inherited”, yes, as a learnt behaviour, not as something that is permanent in my life.

Is anxiety inherited, what do you think? For me I do not believe so. I believe a few of us are born into a lineage where there is anxiety and panic attacks. However that does not indicate that we will have anxiety.

Speaking from my individual personal understanding my Mum had anxiety and I’m not a 100% sure but I think my Dad was a pretty nervous guy. So yes it was in my family. But i have four siblings and not any of them suffer from anxiety or panic attacks. I am additionally a Sagittarius and it sounds as if we are prone to be anxious people. So this could also be a contributing factor.

When I had my first session of anxiety I did ask my Doctor the question “is anxiety inherited”, he was not convinced. As far as he was concerned there was no corroboration either way. So I consider there is no definitive answer to the question “is anxiety inherited”.

I truly consider that there is no such thing as an anxiety gene within us. I do consider that we can pick up on the behaviours of those closest to us when we are growing up. So I feel we can have learnt behaviour. Which is something entirely different to anxiety?

As kids we may have witnessed someone near to us having an anxiety attack and not really understood what was going on. But what we would of picked up, was the fright they where feeling. And if it was a close relative who was acting fearful, then we would really be frightened, as we looked to them to keep us safe. But we would not of understood there fear.

So there may be an argument for anxiety being a learnt behaviour, but as for the question “is anxiety inherited”, I am not certain. Although it would be really advantageous at times to know where my anxiety came from. And yes when i was feeling down it may of been quite helpful to have someone to blame and be angry with. But again thats just part of the process, well it was for me. The not knowing or understanding was really frightening. It would of been beneficial for me to have the doctor say, yes its inherited,at least then i might of least understood my anxiety better.

What do you believe? Please leave a sensible comment to the question “is anxiety inherited”. I would really value your input.

Among all the useful medical treatment presented, it will be of great value to you to achieve ways in coping with panic and anxiety.

The basis i suggest that you achieve ways for coping with panic and anxiety attacks is because, you will be able to cut off impending attacks. That’s why, it is a help to learn and know these practical methods.

One useful way in handling panic and anxiety attacks is relaxation techniques that can be used to help you in muscle relaxation, meditation, relaxed breathing and visualization, also known as guided imagery. The aim is to obtain inner realization of calmness. This is true relaxation.

Equally the body and the mind have to be in a calm stress-free state when using relaxation techniques to handle these attacks. And learning real relaxation techniques could aid in managing warning signs such as teeth clenching, headaches, and hyperventilation. To initiate your body into relaxed style, start off by focusing on the body and suppressing the outside world. Place yourself in a relaxing position and relax your eyes. Just keep the eyelids at ease and heavy without closing them firmly, and allow your jaw to relax and fall gently open. Commence the relaxation method by focusing on scanning your body mentally.

Begin scanning from the lower parts of your body, starting from the toes, working your way up to the legs, groins, torso, then the hands, fingers, then finally, the neck and head. See in your mind’s eye your tension dissolving away as you concentrate on each body parts. Once all the muscles in your body are stress-free, tighten the muscles in every part, moving from one section to another and count to five or more in each section, then relax your muscles. As you are doing this, permit your way of thinking to surge all the way through your psyche, without focusing on them. It is tricky at times to do this. Say to yourself that you are perfectly calm and at ease. Picture yourself in your own favoured place and begin breathing slowly.

Carry out this method daily for five to ten minutes. It will assist in coping with panic and anxiety. Additional different ways to handle panic and anxiety attacks is not to think what could occur. Keep on telling yourself over and over, that it is your thoughts that have produced this panic and anxiety attack. Your thoughts have manifested these bodily reaction, so it stands to reason that you can change those thoughts.

Finally the best way for coping with panic and anxiety is not to struggle it. The more you battle, the more powerful the attack. From my own individual experience i can tell you that it does work. The more you fight your thoughts of panic, the stronger you are making them. Just let the panic and anxiety attacks wash over you.

Anxiety attacks can occur out of the blue. I have spoken with plenty of people who have said “my life is great; I don’t understand why I am suddenly suffering with anxiety attacks”. This is the nature of the beast. There is no designated format for anxiety attacks. They can transpire to people whose lives are going really well, as well, as those who lives are not going so well.

This is why anxiety attacks are so difficult to diagnose. It’s not like having a cold or some other illness, where there symptoms are typical and easy to make out and diagnose.

Understanding what anxiety attacks are will help you to have more control. It’s normal to worry and feel tense or anxious when under burden or facing a stressful situation. Anxiety is the body’s natural response to danger, an automatic alarm that goes off when we feel threatened.

With my personal experience off living with anxiety attacks, I am alert of the fact that the more you think about the anxiety the deeper ingrained the symptoms become. The stronger the symptoms, the stronger the anxiety attacks become. Then you’re in the realms of a viscous circle. This is when it becomes really tough to over come these anxiety attacks.

It’s not till you really become aware of the fact that your thoughts have created your anxiety, so it stands to reason that if you have created the anxiety attack then surely you can UN-create the anxiety attacks. This part is really hard for people to understand. And I know exactly how they think! When I was told this, I rejected it. Why would I want to do this to myself? It did not make sense.

But at the end of the day no matter how much I tried to pay no attention to that fact, it was right, my thoughts where the root of my anxiety. I experimented with it. The more I focused my energy on the anxiety the stronger my anxiety attack became. So with the help of a therapist, I was able to work on my thoughts and beat my anxiety.

I am not anxiety free, however I am able to prevent my anxiety before it becomes a full blown anxiety attack.

One more thing to bear in mind, is that anxiety may be unpleasant, but it isn’t always a unpleasant thing. In fact, anxiety can help us stay alert and focused, spur us to action, and provoke us to solve problems. But when anxiety is constant or overpowering, when it interferes with our relationships and activities-that’s when you’ve crossed the line from normal anxiety into the territory of anxiety disorders.

If you would like some help with anxiety? Then, please read on.

 1. Breathe Correctly.

Researchers at The University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre have pinpointed one of the reasons why breathing is so significant when we are suffering from anxiety. They establish that we habitually hyperventilate when we are in an anxious state. This is correct, as you and I know. We are conscious of short and rapid breathing which in turn creates tiny brainwaves, all contributing to our stressed state.

If we could do with help with anxiety, we will need to learn to breathe with the abdomen muscles. By doing this we create much longer breaths which make slower brainwaves. That is the sort of relaxed breathing we do when we are composed and serene. Whilst we are conscious of this, we can understand this technique and it really does soothe us down, if done right.

 2. Meditation
A large amount of people are put off by the idea of meditation and even yoga because they just feel it is too difficult to be taught and that they will never have the time to do it. All you have to do is to find the quietest place at home.

You can select to sit down or even lie down. The essential thing is to feel comfortable. Contemplate on your breathing and practice letting air fill your lungs and then when exhaling, feel the abdominal muscles tightening. The secret here is that you are able to shut out all the clutter, noise from around you, while you concentrate solely on your breathing. You will be amazed at how much calmer you will feel and you may not need help with anxiety.

 3. Diet
Certainly getting the right nutrients, minerals and vitamins can really help in creating optimal conditions so that our brain functions just as well as our body. Any foods that can boost the levels of serotonin can enhance our mood. That can always lower anxiety levels. The best foods, are the complex carbohydrates which are the whole grains, fruit, vegetables and nuts. Did you know that the element called tryptophan helps in calming and is contained in some dairy products and also turkey meat?

aiospwlwbsend–>

 4. Herbal remedy for anxiety?
Lots of herbs are now known to help keep anxiety at bay. The better known ones are valerian, camomile, passion flower and winter cherry. These actually work and there are no nasty side effects either, unlike the anti anxiety medications prescribed in massive doses across the populace.
